Discord bots that remember your server
Five bots can remember a Discord server, and they remember different things. Kodama indexes your server's lore so members can search it. Memory keeps short summaries of what a channel decided. OpenClaw and Hermes Agent are free agents you run yourself. Eva is a hosted AI member for one friend group who keeps the chat itself and talks with you about it.
I built Eva, so read this as her maker's comparison. Every fact about the other four links to their own site or docs, as they were on 18 October 2026.

"Long-term memory (MEMORY.md) only auto-loads in DM sessions; guild channels do not load it" (docs) | Notes it writes itself: MEMORY.md up to 2,200 characters and USER.md up to 1,375 (docs) |
| How far back | From when each member joins, until they erase it or the group stops using her | "Server data is retained while Kodama is installed" (privacy). The paid Index plan adds a "server conversation history scan" (site) | From the moment a channel is enabled. Memories expire after 14, 90 or 365 days, by plan (pricing) | The last 20 channel messages by default, set with historyLimit (docs) | Up to 50 recent channel messages when mentioned, by default (docs) |
| Who it reads | Only members who press Join (18+). Nobody else is read or stored | Messages in channels where it is active. Members can opt out with /optout (commands) | Channels an admin enables. Members can opt out with /ignore_me. DMs are ignored (docs) | Whoever you allow in its config (docs) | Users you allow with DISCORD_ALLOWED_USERS. Each person gets their own session in a channel by default (docs) |
| How you use it | Talk to her like a friend: mention, reply or say her name | @mention to ask, /lore search, /recap. Organic replies on the Index plan (site) | /ask and /catch-me-up. "It can also chime in when someone asks something the channel already settled" (site) | Replies when @mentioned, by default (docs) | Replies when @mentioned, by default (docs) |

- You want it free, open source and on your own machine.
- You are happy to edit config to get longer channel history.

Yes, all five keep something. Eva and Kodama keep the messages themselves. Memory keeps summaries. OpenClaw and Hermes keep memory files and read recent messages.
Which one can read messages from before it was added?
Kodama's paid Index plan lists a "server conversation history scan". Memory starts when a channel is enabled. Eva never reads or imports anything a member wrote before they joined.

Which one is cheapest?
OpenClaw and Hermes are free, but you pay for the AI model and run them yourself. Kodama and Memory have free plans with daily or channel limits. Eva is $15 a month for the whole server.
