Eva vs Hermes Agent for Discord group chats
Hermes Agent by Nous Research is a free, self-hosted agent that learns as you use it, across Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp and Signal. Eva is a hosted AI member for one Discord friend group, built to remember the whole group's chat. For your own agent, pick Hermes. For a server where someone remembers what everyone said, pick Eva.
I built Eva after Hermes and OpenClaw kept forgetting who said what in my friends' server. The table explains why: in a group, Hermes's defaults keep each person's conversation apart, and its memory notes are small.
Side by side
| Eva | Hermes Agent | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An AI member for one private Discord server | A self-improving agent you run yourself (repo) |
| Where it works | Discord only | CLI, Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal |
| Conversation in a server channel | One shared chat for the whole group | Separate per person by default: "Hermes isolates session history per user inside the channel"; can be switched to one shared session (docs) |
| Long-term memory | The whole channel as a memory tree: today word for word, older weeks shorter, zoom back to the original messages | Notes the agent writes itself: MEMORY.md up to 2,200 characters and USER.md up to 1,375, plus full-text search over past sessions (docs) |
| Messages it reads back when asked | Every message from members who joined, in her channels | Up to 50 recent channel messages when mentioned, by default (docs) |
| "Who said that?" | Looks up the real message and quotes it before answering | Answers from its session, notes and session search |
| When it replies in a server | When you talk to her: mention, reply or her name | When @mentioned, by default; free-response channels can be set (docs) |
| Who it reads | Only members who press Join (18+). Leave or Forget me any time | Whoever you allow in its config |
| Tasks beyond chat | Reminders, web search, drawing pictures | Much more: terminal, tools, skills it writes for itself, many backends |
| Hosting | Hosted for you on a server in Germany | You run it: a VPS, Docker, SSH or serverless (repo) |
| Price | $15 a month per server, 1,500 replies, model included | Free and MIT-licensed; your own model keys or a paid Nous Portal plan |
Pick Hermes if
- You want a capable agent for yourself that writes its own skills and runs tools.
- You use Telegram, Slack, WhatsApp or Signal as well as Discord.
- You want it free, open source and self-hosted, with your choice of model.
Pick Eva if
- Your friend group lives in one Discord server and you want one shared memory of it.
- You want "who said that?" answered with the real message, months later.
- Nobody wants to run a server or manage keys.
- You want each friend to choose for themselves whether she reads them.
Questions
Does Hermes share memory between people in a Discord channel?
By default each person in a channel gets their own session. Its notes (MEMORY.md, USER.md) are small and written by the agent. You can switch a channel to one shared session in its config.
Is Eva built on Hermes?
No. Eva runs on Pi Durable, which saves every step to a database, so a restart in the middle of a reply picks up where it stopped.
Does Eva read people who didn't join?
No. Messages from members who haven't pressed Join are not read, stored or answered. See the privacy policy.
